Classic Fiction

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - This novel is about a man who orders his life around one desire: to be reunited with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost five years earlier. Gatsby's quest leads him from poverty to wealth, into the arms of his beloved, and eventually to death.

Animal Farm by George Orwell - The book tells a story about a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding - This book tells the story of a group of young boys who find themselves alone on a deserted island. They try to develop some rules and find a way to organize everything but without any adults to serve as a civilizing impulse, the children eventually become violent and brutal.

Romance

Atonement by Ian McEwan - this book follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis and Robbie Turner. When the couple are torn apart by a lie constructed by Cecilia's jealous younger sister, Briony, all three of them must deal with the consequences. Robbie is the hardest hit, since Briony's deception results in his imprisonment, but hope for Cecilia and her beau increases when their paths cross during World War II.

The Years that Followed by Catherine Dunne - This book tells a story about two wronged women who plot for revenge. Their intricately crafted schemes send shockwaves through their families that echo for many generations to come.

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote - A young woman in New York City who meets a young man when he moves into her apartment building. He is with an older woman who is very wealthy, but he wants to be a writer. She is working as an expensive escort and searching for a rich, older man to marry.
